Volume is load × reps, summed per exercise and per session — the same definition BodyPlan applies to your logged workouts. It's an arithmetic total of the work you entered, not a measure of how effective that work was.
- Resistance training volume and muscle hypertrophy: a meta-analysis Schoenfeld, Ogborn & Krieger (2017). Weekly set volume shows a dose–response relationship with hypertrophy. Sets performed close to failure, not total tonnage, are the volume measure most closely associated with the outcome.
- Maximal repetitions at percentages of the one-repetition maximum Nuzzo, Pinto, Nosaka & Steele (2023), Sports Medicine. A meta-regression of ~7,000 people across 269 studies. Repetitions fall as %1RM rises, but the spread between individuals widens at lighter loads (about ±2.5 reps at 80% 1RM versus ±4.4 at 60%), and differs between exercises — so treat the rep ranges beside each percentage as typical, not exact.

What training volume means
Training volume is the total amount of work you performed: load × reps, summed across your sets. Three sets of 10 at 60 kg is 1,800 kg of volume. It's sometimes called tonnage or volume load.
This is the same definition BodyPlan uses when it calculates session and weekly volume from your logged workouts, so the figures here match what you'd see in the app.
What volume is useful for
Volume is most useful as a trend for a single exercise or a single muscle group. If your squat volume has been climbing steadily over six weeks, you're progressively overloading — whether that came from more weight, more reps or more sets.
It's also a practical way to compare sessions honestly. A session that felt harder isn't necessarily one that did more work; volume tells you which is which.
What volume doesn't tell you
Tonnage on its own doesn't determine how effective a workout was. Some important limitations:
- It ignores intensity. Ten sets at 50% and three sets at 85% can total the same volume while producing very different adaptations.
- It ignores proximity to failure. Sets stopped well short of failure drive less adaptation than hard sets of the same tonnage.
- It isn't comparable across exercises. A leg press moves far more absolute load than a lateral raise. That's a fact about the movement, not about your effort.
- It ignores bodyweight work. Pull-ups and press-ups produce real training stimulus with no external load to count.
Many coaches track hard sets per muscle group per week alongside tonnage, precisely because it captures the things volume misses.
